Junction K. Cowsert, 88, died Saturday April 9th, 2011 with his family by his side in Junction, Texas.

K. was born August 20th, 1922 in Junction, Texas to Gully and Mamie Keesee Cowsert. He graduated from Junction High School in 1940 and attended Sul Ross State University where he studied accounting for two years. He then transferred to The University of Texas at Austin where he continued study for one year. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on November 4th, 1942 and was transferred to Southwestern University in Georgetown where he continued studies before beginning active duty on July 1st, 1943.

K. served as a Military Police officer during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on May 2nd, 1946. After the war, K. returned home to Kimble County and joined his father in managing the 5,000 acre family ranch in west Kimble County and an additional 20,000 acre ranch near Sierra Blanca in Hudspeth County of far West Texas.

K. married Wanda Lee Taylor on July 3rd, 1954. Wanda preceded him in death in 2005 after more then 50 years of marriage. K. was a former president of the Hill Country Fair Association, served as president of the Ranchers Fire Association, and served as president of the Kimble County School Board. He served on the Kimble County Selective Service Board for 25 years. He also was a former or of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and a member of the Southwest Cattle Raisers Association.

Up until his death, K. was president of the Coke Stevenson Memorial Corporation and a member of the Board of Directors at Junction National Bank. Throughout his life, K. spent much of his time managing the family ranch. In fact, he managed the ranch in Kimble County for 63 years, longer than the previous three generations combined. K. also enjoyed hunting, cooking, gardening, travel, and fine foods.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lee Bennett of Junction his grandson, Lance Richard Nelson of Austin and his brother, Gully Cowsert Jr. of Junction.

A public visitation will be held Monday April 11th from 57 PM at Kimble Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Tuesday April 12th at 2 PM at Kimble Funeral Home with burial to follow at Copperas Cemetery.
