Jo Ann Schaefer

Jo Ann Schaefer, 87, of Junction, TX passed from this life on February 5, 2021 at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo, TX.

Jo Ann Schaefer was the youngest daughter of Hazel and James Herring, and she cherished her relationship with her late siblings James and Helen, and is survived by her sister Joyce. In 1950, she graduated high school and attended Texas Tech University for a year before leaving to marry her high school sweetheart, C. W. Schaefer on September 7, 1951. While C. W. attended Tarleton, they lived in Stephenville where they shared many special occasions at Dorothy and Jake’s Diner – a place that C. W. says, “it wasn’t a fancy place, but we didn’t have a lot of money so when we wanted to do something special we shared their steak, which was real good.”

Together, Jo Ann and C. W. had six children. Their first child Trey was born in Paducah, TX, and they went on to have three more children David, Joe, and Timothy before they moved back home to Junction where they had Carla and Sarah. She took many kids under her wing, so she was also a mom to many kids other than her own. Jo Ann loved her family, including her 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, but nothing compared to her love of Christ. She was gifted in prayer and memorizing scripture, and her grandchildren recount Jo Ann, or Mommie Jo as they called her, covering them in prayer before they left her house. She enjoyed traveling to the coast because she said standing on the beach was the closest you could be to God.

She had a talent for penmanship, which she used to write her grandkids letters and to keep books at the Ford and Chevrolet dealerships before they both closed. Her grandchildren cherish their memories in Kerrville eating at Stars Drive-in before attending plays at the Pointe Theater in Ingram. She enjoyed sitting in the front yard drinking coffee, and she was known for her love of jewelry, 7-up cake, and her vibrant fashion sense.

Jo Ann is preceded in death by her parents; brother, James Herring; sister, Helen Stanberry; son, Carl William “Trey” Schaefer, III; great-grandson, Benjamin Schaefer; and great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Schaefer.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, C.W. Schaefer, Jr.; children, David Schaefer of Junction, Joe (Mickey) Schaefer of Sonora, Tim (Della) Schaefer of Comanche, OK, Carla (John) Mogford of Junction, and Sarah (Rick) Kinder of Malvern, IA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Scott.
