Federico “Pico” Rendon, 88 of Junction passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Pico was born on December 5, 1936, in Rocksprings, Texas to Gilberto and Maria (Torres) Rendon. He moved with his family to Mineral Wells, Texas, as a young boy and grew up there.
Federico embodied a quiet spirit and possessed a strong work ethic which he carried throughout his life. In his youth he worked alongside his father and brothers shearing sheep in and around the town of Wamsutter, Wyoming, the epicenter of wool production in the region at the time. It was there where he met and married Emma Alle.
Following his departure from the shearing industry & the Tasinques lifestyle Federico moved back to Texas where, based out of Graham, he spent several years providing bilingual booksales to local and regional schools. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s while employed with TJ Moore Lumber Company in Junction, TX that he truly found his niche and discovered his passion as a builder & carpenter. Spurred on by a keen interest in the various woods, materials, & building techniques being used at that time Federico continued to explore this newfound passion & also found & developed a gift as a brick and rock mason. Throughout his time as both a builder & craftsman he constructed and remodeled many homes and commercial properties in the Texas Hill Country area. Alongside his successful construction business and as a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit Federico also opened Pico’s Mexican Restaurant on Main Street in Junction, TX which he ran for several years with his then wife Olivia Gonzales Rendon.
In addition to his professional endeavors & having been reared in an era when rural Texas schools remained segregated, Federico developed & held a strong interest in the furtherance of his fellow Mexican Americans & Hispanics enjoyment of equal rights & opportunities. Never one shy of words, Federico spoke on behalf of, mentored, & participated in advocacy for Mexican Americans & Hispanics throughout his life.
Semi-retired from the construction industry, Federico returned to his roots and enjoyed for some time the raising, buying, selling, and otherwise tending of his goats & other livestock, crafting his own countryside homes, and various other projects in the Junction, Fredericksburg, & Kerrville areas.
Later in life, Federico, then fully retired, moved back to Junction where he spent his days conversing with long-timeneighbors & welcoming newcomers on his daily neighborhood walks, as well as engaging in lengthy discussions at the local coffee shops with old friends & new friends alike.
As a father he instilled in his children integrity, honesty, dedication, commitment, and accountability, which were all the traits essential for strong work ethics. He always said it was okay to get your hands dirty, to get the job done and to get it done right. He took pride in the achievements and accomplishments of each of his children and grandchildren. To his grandchildren, Pico was known as “Popo” a title he wore with immense pride and joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Gilbert Rendon, Jr. and Rafael Rendon, sister Esperanza De Leon, nephew’s Mauro and Lauro Rendon and Rolando Rendon.
Federico’s legacy lives on through his children by whom he will be fondly remembered: Federico (Freddy) Rendon of Portland, Oregon, Isabel Rendon Moore (husband Dr. Mark Moore) of Arlington, TX, Danny Rendon (wife Ortensia) of Kerrville, TX,Melissa Rendon Venzor (husband Phillip) of Kerrville, TX, Patty Rendon Colvin (husband Gibson) of Junction, TX., Jessie Grimaldo of Austin, and Gieana Rendon of Casper, Wyoming.
