Doris Nelson

Doris Marie Nelson went to be with our Lord on January 5, 2019 at her home in Junction, TX at the age of 97. In her final moments, she was surrounded by friends, family, and her loving caregivers.

Doris was born in Rosalie, Nebraska on September 5, 1921. She was the eldest daughter of Raymond and Lucy Fouts and Jim and Myrtle Holt. While attending Onawa High School she worked as a waitress in her father's ice cream parlor, where she met her future husband, Karl Nelson. After graduation, the two began dating and after 11 months, they were wed on June 9th, 1939.
After their marriage, Karl assisted with the war efforts as a welder and drag-line operator in a ship yard located in Bremerton, Washington. Doris, wanting to assist with the efforts, ran a drill press for the same ship yard. After the war ended, Karl and Doris moved across the United States to Arizona, finally settling in Junction, Texas to be closer to her mother and step-father.

Mrs. Nelson and her husband opened a small auto repair shop in their back yard. Their first day in business yielded a .05 cent income. Through years of hard work the two established their automotive dealership at the corner of 4th and College St in Junction. Throughout her life, Mrs. Nelson worked various jobs including restaurant cook, waitress, parts clerk, wrecker driver, and her most important jobs, wife and mother to her three children.
Mrs. Nelson was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She participated in the church choir, taught Sunday school, and was an active participant in the United Methodist Women. At the time of her death, Doris was the oldest member of the Junction First United Methodist Church being an active member for 70 years.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Karl Richard Nelson; grandson, Andrew Noe Gonzalez, and daughter in-law, Deborah Cypher-Nelson.

She is survived by her youngest sister, Cora Ann Fouts of Iowa; her three children, James and Patty Nelson of Midlothian, Debra and Michael Dechert, and Lori and Kenny Smart of Junction; six grandchildren, Lance Nelson, Candi Pfluger, Britany Winett, Mindy Carrington, Ryan Dechert, and Jennifer Guajardo; plus ten great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren also survive her.
