Betty Murr

Betty Sue Murr

5.21.1926 ~ 1.8.2023

After 96 years our mother, grandmother and friend finished her life’s race on Jan. 8th 2023 with family by her side. Her journey began and ended in the Hill Country. Born in Eldorado, TX on May 21st 1926, she grew up with loving parents and two brothers. After graduating high school in Ft. Stockton, Betty took a Grey Hound bus to Springfield, MO to attend Western Union School. Upon completing her education, Betty worked as a telegram operator during WWII. It was while she was working that Betty transcribed the message that her older brother, Hop Jr. was missing at sea North of France. Five months after the war ended, she married the man she had written letters to all during the war, Felix Murr, in February of 1946. In 1948 they welcomed a baby boy, Bobby Murr, and three years later a baby girl, Carolyn Murr. After living in the Murr community, the family moved to the ranch at Cleo where they raised their kids, watched them marry and have children of their own. Betty lost the love of her life in 1970 when Felix passed away. Betty, or as she was known to some, Gaw, was incredibly proud of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Every Thanksgiving her home was packed full of family, amazing food, and of course her famous Italian cream cake that was often auctioned at the March of Dimes Fundraiser at Copperas. In her most recent years, you would have seen her sitting on her porch listening to the band play at the football games or having a cup of coffee with her amazing friends whom she shared life with (and if you knew her, you knew that coffee was strong, with a pinch of salt, and made in a percolator some say was as old as she was). Betty lived her life as a classy, upright woman in every way and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. She left this world as peacefully and gracefully as she lived in it.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Hop and Ada Ashmore, her husband Felix Murr, both brothers, Hop jr. and Sam Ashmore, nephew Colin, and great grandson, Devin. Her survivors include her children, Bobby (Sherry) Murr and extended family, Carolyn (Charles) McGuire, granddaughters, Laura (Marvin) Wilson, Sharla (Lawrence) Morrison, Leslea (Brent) Charlesworth, Kehm (Richard) Coufal and Jessica (Zachary) Ehlers. Great grandchildren include, Charlie (Jordan) Wilson, Leann (Dustin) Overby, Addie (Layne) Townsend, Lauren, Candace & Sterling Morrison, Colee & Emilee Charlesworth, Ledger & Adler Coufal, Bennett & Baylie Ehlers and 7 great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Joy Ashmore, nephews and their families and many more friends and family members.

The family would like to sincerely thank each one who made her last days more beautiful. Each visit, each moment spent was truly a light in her day. Special love and gratefulness to Becky, Olivia, Menard Manor and Kimble Hospital. You each have a beautiful calling. May God bless you for the devotion and service you render to our community and loved ones.
