Adelaide Copeland

Adelaide Constance Van Hoogenhuyze Copeland, of Junction, formerly of San Antonio, moved gracefully into the arms of her loving Lord on May 21, 2014.
Momma aged 100 years lived fully up until a lifeending injury on May 15th.
She was born on December 10, 1913 in San Antonio, to Edith and N.F. Van Hoogenhuyze.

She was a member of the first graduating class of Jefferson High School, ROTC Sponsor, and went on to master the art of public speaking as a student at the Margie E. Will School of Elocution. She succeeded in catching the eye of William E. Copeland, and after only two weeks they began a 38 year union as husband and wife, blessed with three children.

Mrs. Copeland was the oldest living member in age and in duration of membership of the First Baptist Church, San Antonio and was the first woman to receive the Floy Cadwallader Heritage Award 1998 for outstanding service to the congregation. In addition to meeting family responsibilities, Mrs. Copeland was Vice President and CoOwner of William Van Hoogenhuyze Wholesale Hardware Co. where she worked side by side with her sons, Fred and Jim, until it closed in 1990. She also was the owner of Copeland Ranches in Wilson and Comal Counties.

Momma was an avid dove hunter, Sunday School teacher, much sought after public speaker, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation Champion for Skeet Shooting with a 20 Ga. in October 1948 in Dallas. An avid fresh and saltwater fisherman, she caught her fish of a lifetime a 32 14 lb. Redfish in Rockport at age 98. After losing her eyesight and moving to Junction to be near her daughter, she learned to play the electronic keyboard.

She became a world class cruiser beginning in 2007, and she and her daughter enjoyed an annual cruise until taking their last just this past March.

Cherished for her friendliness, wisdom, unwavering faith, and zest for life, Momma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her oldest son Fred, a great grandson Daniel Beaty, and daughterinlaw Sharon.

She is survived by her son, Jim and wife Jean daughter, Connie Booth and husband Bryan daughterinlaw, Norma five grandchildren three stepgrandchildren seven great grandchildren seven stepgreat grandchildren one greatgreat grandchild one adopted grandchild from Florida and extended family and cherished friends. Momma was an inspiration to us all and will be missed.
